BEAUFORT, S.C. -- Officials say an alligator bit off part of a golfer's arm as he leaned over to pick up his ball at a private South Carolina course.

The man, who is in his 70s, was retrieving his ball from a pond when the 10-foot alligator bit him at Ocean Creek Golf Course in Beaufort County. The gator pulled the golfer into the pond and ripped off his arm in the struggle. His golf partners were able to free him.

Wildlife workers killed the alligator and retrieved the arm in the hopes it might be reattached.

The man has not been identified. He was being treated at the Medical University of South Carolina, but officials there would not release any information about him.

A call to the golf course was not immediately returned.

You're right Cobra. I could be a lot more sensitive. That had to be a really brutal experience.

No alligators to worry about here in the Rockies. I was charged by an bull elk once. I raised my 9 iron in a threatening position while doing my best Howard Dean impression ..........letting out a guttural scream. He stopped...... and i gave a wide berth as i vacated the area. Problem was.....the next hole played back ; right through the herd again. I hit a good drive over the herd and gave as much ground as possible ; 9 iron to the ready. He made a couple of threatening charges again , only breaking off when i roared at him like Alec Baldwin having a phone conversation with his daughter.

It was actually quite frightening .....they have known to do some damage to people when their cows are around. It was almost as bad as a redneck bar i made the mistake of visiting one time , just outside Grand Junction .......bulls defending their cows.....it gets mean ! :D
