I still think Hale Irwin went on the best run ever when in his 50's, he just seemed to dominate for a few years stretch back then.
You do you think?

As far as Senior Tour career, I would agree that it's Irwin, and he's so far in front that second place can't even see him. But Sam Snead won on the PGA Tour at 52, and seriously competed into his 60's. One of my good golf buddies still raves about watching Snead nearly win at 67 in the Quad Cities Open - if he had made anything under 10' all day he would have taken home the trophy.

Hale Irwin was , and IS , a great player in his 50's and now 60's. Tom Watson would have to be considered , given his unbelievable play in majors and elsewhere.
I think Duffer has it called though. Sam Snead did most of his late career work in that pre-history of golf coverage in the sixties and seventies. Golf didn't get the kind of coverage it gets now . He stayed limber well into his seventies and , as Duffer noted , could have won a Tour event at 67 !!! He was hitting it 220 down the middle as an octogenarian starter , at the Masters. Snead often gets , a bit , bypassed when great players are talked about. He played fantastic golf his entire life.

Langer was having a pretty good run until his thumb injury. Had a nice talk with Irwin about the state of college athletics. He is upset with the lack of academics now shown by the players.

Langer is a class guy and a really good player. Funny...both my thumbs were sore a few weeks ago from hockey. I just decided to take the thumbs out of my swing. My new book on the subject will be in bookstores soon. "Take The Thumbs Out Of Your Swing "......by MaxwellSmart ; explores the no thumbs approach to scoring and how YOU can integrate it into your game. There's a forward by Charles Barkley on how you can combine the "no thumbs " approach with his "no swing" approach.

Hale Irwin was a really good athlete in college. Played football at Colorado and was pretty darn good....but you guys know that.
" Lack of Academics"......it's a joke!!!! Now ; they want to pay a stipend to college athletes so they won't be tempted to break NCAA rules. Yeah ..right...200 bucks a month , or something , is going to do the trick for some guy who's driving a BMW around now ! Where is THAT money going to come from ? They will have to give a stipend to EVERY student athlete ! That pudgy chick way down the bench on the field hockey team will be getting the same stipend as the quarterback driving his Beemer. That's a lot of stipends ! I might go back to school ! I can make the Bumfruck U. golf team....gimme that stipend ! The cost of a college education is ridiculous . They are charging ever increasing student fees for sports and other activities. They pay some dickhead coach a million dollars. Nike owns half these guys. If they want to have minor league sports for elite athletes , let the leagues pay for it . They are turning college sports into something bad. It's about money and cheating. Most of the major programs are not turning out scholars. They are athletic mercenaries , playing for the highest bidder. Some of the basketball programs have a ZERO grad rate ! Maybe some fricken courtesy cars are in order. Free meals and haircuts ought to do the trick. Now i'm all pissed off ! Thanks a lot Hips !!! :0)

Irwin was an academic all-american. $1M is cheap for a D-1 coach, some assistants make that much. At the UW, they were actually upset when crew was made an NCAA sport and they had to follow (?) their rules. Had an impromptu grip lesson and now the idea is to keep your right thumb inside the grip.

Is this a great country.....or what ? You're telling me that there are assistant coaches making a million dollars a year in college sports !!!! " But the football program brings in so much money for the university ! " That's the response when the subject is brought up. The question is.....what happens to all that money ? It's the same question we need to ask our government. The inference is that the money funds all the other sports and makes life wonderful for everyone on campus. I wonder if they did an audit of these things ; what would it reveal ? It sometimes seems like these colleges exist to give football fans their jollies.

What do you mean by "inside" the grip with the right thumb ? Crew would be cool. Spent a lot of time in a rowboat as a kid. I used to row to school sometimes . Grew up on a big lake back east. Wasn't at all cool to be in a rowboat , but i was somewhat poor. The trick was to have friends with nice boats . Did very well in that regard.
