Happens occasionally, usually when it's time to land. Always a sad situation in a great event. No flying today, though, winds too high, even at sunup. Tomorrow is the final day, and judging from the weather reports, they probably won't get to fly tomorrow either.

Sounded pretty scary when one balloon got caught in electrical wires.

Yeah, and that's how most of the injuries and deaths occur. Once in a while they'll hang up in them and survive, but not often. Last year one hung up in the wires, and they were fine, just hanging there waiting on rescue, and a gust caught the gondola and a lady fell out and dropped 70 feet and died. it's actually a very safe event, but accidents do happen. Where the pilot was landing in the one where the death occurred, it is kind of infamous for "tricky" winds once the ground starts warming up, and sure enough, one got him. He was a very experienced pilot, and was flying an experiment balloon, triangular shaped. One of my daughters took the kids, and she sent me some pics, and she has one of that one. I'll have to resize them to post them, but I'll try to do that in the next few days. Pretty event.
