Watching the Transitions and Bubba Watson has 194 to the flag ...................... hits a 9-iron past it. That's flat-out insane! That's about my 5-W distance on a good day!!!! What's next? 65* wedges to 150-yd par 3s????? Holy cow!

If Bubba Watson can hit a 9 iron almost 200 yards, then there are only one of two explanations for it.

1.He eats Wheaties every day for breakfast,or...

2.The guy has got a great swing and hits it great distances because his swing is so powerful.

I'll take my second reason as the reason.Bubba has a nice swing,in case you haven't noticed. His downswing is where the power is,and that is where all the power is generated. The guy is incredibly strong, and as a result,he gets more distance per shot than most players out there,no matter what club he is using.

Good equipment+power+a good swing pattern=Good results...no matter what kind of player you are.

And to give you an example of this...I just went out a few days ago and bought a new set of irons.Taylor Made Tour Burners. They are the best irons that I have ever hit as far as feel goes, and all of my distances just went up about 20 yards a club...without any change in the way I swing.I can now hit a 7 iron 170 yards instead of the 150 I used to hit it,and it does make a big difference in the way I play.

Yeah - equipment-wise I had the same experience. Went from Titleist 962Bs to Callaway X14 Pro Series and was instantly a club and a half to two clubs longer.
Cheers

Supposedly the loft has changed on the clubs over the years which makes a corresponding club go further.

Very true! My Callaways are lofted a degree strong and the PW is a degree and a half strong compared to the Titelists. Had they been straight X14s, rather than Pro Series, they'd have been 2* strong.
And who knows what lofts the pros are playing - they tinker with them club by club and I'd bet they have no clubs that are anywhere near standard loft.
Even me, for that matter. My GW is a 53* Cleveland rusty bent to 51 cuz I couldn't find a 51* in the rusty finish - they were all chrome - which I hate.
Cheers

I'm sure we couldn't even come close to playing their clubs. It will be interesting with some rentals over the next 3 weeks. It will be a good excuse though 8-)

Yeah .....TWO nine irons would be more like it.

I don't know how "strong" Bubba is......but he really has some clubhead speed and hits a golf ball a long way. He plays with it too much though. He moves the ball too much . He snaps it off or pushes too many shots to be consistent enough to win. I don't think he has ever won a tournament. He's different...fun to watch.....should win one of these days.

Sure fun to watch when Goosen, who is also real long, hits 7 on that hole then Bubba comes up and wails a 9 over top of him.
Be fun to put a 4 some together that included Bubba, JB Holmes, and Boo Weekley. Saw something similar in the mid 80s at the Canadian Open. Opening day was 3-somes and it was Greg Norman (in his prime), DL-III and Dan Pohl. Pohl wasn't a big star but he was just stupid long. Followed them for the front 9. Didn't matter which one was hitting but, when they hit driver, we wondered if the damned ball was ever going to land.

I can't relate at all to how far any of these guys hit their irons. I remember when a 194 yard shot would be a 4 iron...maybe a huge 5 iron for me.... but a 9 iron is just sick !

Like you said Chuck...it's an "easy" five wood. :)
