Hi gang!
So!
As a Canuck, and fellow little guy, ;) it goes without saying I was pulling hard for Mikey when he was in contention - (and Double D as a 2nd choice, BTW!) But, I see a trend I don't like. It seems that Mike has proven he can do well and win but, to me, if he has a bad round in the middle - his confidence goes south and it's el foldo!

Thoughts? Has it passed him by?

I hope not!

Cheers
Chuck

I just think his size works agains him especially in the majors that are such a grind. There are lots of "small" players that have been very succesful though like Player, Kite, Crenshaw...

I think Mikey's as good as any player out there.
He just hits the ball backward. :-}

Just kidding Chuck!!!!!!!

I like to watch him, he hits some great shots. He was the one who introduced the half swing waggle that so many folks are using now.
It just seems like he gets a bit overwhelmed when he gets in a position to win early in the tournament.

Later.

I kinda think maybe you're both right. Weir is definitely a "lightweight" at 5'9" and a buck forty and that may have something to do with stamina. Yet Johnny Miller called him "pound-for-pound, one of the longer guys out here.", based on the fact that, despite is small stature, he can still belt it 300 and sometimes a skoash more. And when his wedge game is working it's like he's throwing darts.
As for getting overwhelmed - certainly possible! I remember reading a piece about the "comfort zone". It's almost as if someone is afraid to achieve the next big milestone so they revert to where they're comfortable. Alternately, they start trying to be careful not to screw up and do just that. In the case of a tour pro - afraid to win arguably the biggest major of them all. I know when I was yet to break 80, every time I had a chance to, I'd tighten up and really mess up the last 2-3 holes and come in at my usual 81/82/83. Once I broke it though, it was routine. Maybe that's a head worm for Mike. Yes he's won a major but, as Fungolfer said, he kind of half backed into it when Mattiace screwed up the play-off.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see - eh?!
Cheers

IMO, with what he has gone through and a little set back he will be at the top again. I tend to agree with Miller on that.

Hey Cobra -
Yeah! There are a couple things that have set Mike back that he won't talk about. One is that he was injured in the, I think, '03 Canadian Open. (The year he lost to VJ on the 18th hole.) On the way to the 18th green some drunk-assed goof fan reached over the ropes, grabbed him around the neck and gave him a serious "noogie" and pinched a nerve in his neck. Took him, literally, years for it to heal and it still flares up once in a while.
The other, I'm told, is marital problems. WARNING - I CANNOT VERIFY THIS! IT IS HEARSAY! Comes from a member of my regular w/e 4-some with a relative who knows Mike and talks to him several times a year. Story is, Weir's wife is a devout (fanatic?) Mormon and WILL NOT leave him alone about being a professional golfer and, as such, has to play (work) on Sunday. It's, apparently, against her Mormon religion to work on Sunday. Sundays, you pray! Constantly in his face to give up the Tour now that they're comfortable from The Masters win, and others, and his golf apparel/accessory company, Weir Golf. That's fine, Briscia! It might be your religion - not necessarily Mike's.
Sorry - almost got started on a rant there! As I say, that last paragraph is pure hearsay but, there have been rumblings from other quarters as well................ Take it for what you will.
Cheers
Tele

I had heard that there was some strife in the marriage too but never heard what it was about. Makes sense with him living in Utah.

He has been through some injuries and if the marriage is shaky that can add pressure. He is a great golfer and IMO I think we will see more of him. No rant at all there Tele,,, !!! :D

Certainly agree on the pressure from trouble on the homestead. I, too, think he's one of the better players out there. He's no Bubba Watson but, DAMN! For a little guy, he can get it out there. More important, from 7-i in, his iron game is laser surgery - particularly with his wedges.
All in all, I think he's had some personal pressures, an injury or two and maybe a head worm about being in contention in the big ones. He's young yet. If he learns how to get by that - look out! Phil payed him a great compliment last time the Canadian Open was in the Toronto area. Said, "He's not afraid of anybody - nor should he be."
Later - Tele
