Good to see Mickelson back in action this weeK. Torrey Pines is a beautiful venue and the weather is nice.

The "no square groove issue" came up when it was reported Phil was using some pre-1990ish Ping wedges with square grooves because they are legal due to the lawsuit won by Ping against USGA back in those days.

Phil was pretty adament that he thought the new rule was a bad idea. It takes the 64 degree wedge out of guys bags due to the fact that the ball will just roll up the face of a 64 with v-grooves . Mickelson is really throwing it in the USGA's face with his use of the Pings.

Anyway......i like to watch Phil play and Ernie is out there playing fairly well.

Callaway can't be happy with that move by Phil - "If you really want good wedges, buy an old Ping!"

Well, isn't that what you want it to do with a 64 - roll up the face and land like a dead rat????? Oh - sorry! Forgot - these guys can hit a 64 from distances I'd hit a PW so - yeah - they just might want some stop on it. ;)
Cheers

Could you imagine if this was Tiger instead. He pulls out an old Ping wedge that somehow by the act of an old lawsuit is still OK to use on the tour. People would be calling him a cheater (well, a cheater in golf also :) ) and hammering him.

I guess it's a spin issue........at least that's the kind of spin they're putting on it. :)

LOL....I might hurt myself with a 64 degree wedge. I have a 60 degree that i put in the bag at times , but it is usually on double secret probation , due to a fluffed pitch shot.

Hello Roy......they ARE "hammering" Phil a bit with this issue. Scott McCarron had a lot to say about cheating and the example Phil Aand a few others may be setting. I found that rather odd considering Scott uses a long putter. There are many golfers who don't think THAT club even resembles golf. ( I would be one of those...but that's another issue.)

It seems Scott uses a specialized club to increase his skill level in an area of his game , but he has a problem with Phil doing the same thing within the rules. Phil thinks the rule change is "ridiculous" and this is his answer. I don't think he , actually , has one in the bag yet.

Anyway...good tournament so far.

Apparently ; Phil designed wedges for Callaway and submitted them to the USGA fro approval for play. I don't know what that outcome was and i don't know what kind of grooves they have. Lost in this is the fact that the todays golf balls can be designed to be super-spinny ( Is that a word???) and that is the reason Phil; has gone to a 6 degree driver to bring his spin rate down with a new spinny ball he is using.

With the envelope being pushed in many areas of golf equipment , it seems like grooves are a funny place to start with new rules.....but the USGA is all-knowing like our great and wonderful leader...The Obama.
