LOL....Ahhhh the "Hawk." I had a really good friend who was a Cubs fan.......he made me listen to Harry Caray. Harry might be in that "so bad ....they're good" category. I probably NEED to butter up Roy !!! I have heard that call (Ernie Harwell) and i agree he' was one of the best. Didn't get to hear too many games though. I was a National League fan and grew up listening to Phillies games. A guy named Bill Campbell did the games when i was a kid and Kalas took over when i was in highschool. He did games with Richie Ashburn ; who deserves being on the list too ! Probably the best work Harry ever did was for NFL Films. His deep voice is perfect for football. Bob Uecker is definitely an oversight. He is extremely funny and has a wonderful voice for baseball. "JUSTTTTTTTTTT...A LITTLE INSIIIIDE !" I used to use that one when my son pitched in highschool. He tended to miss high and hard with his fastball at times ! That call would make the other team nervous and the umps pissed ; but it always got a giggle or two.

I would have to put Mel Allen somewhere on that list as he was the one i always listened to on the radio when i was a kid listening to the Yankees games. What a unique voice and style Mel had.

ITDR - Mel is listed at #2 behind only Vin Scully.
JJ - I wasn't a big Harry C fan either but have sort of gotten to like the Radio guys Hughes/Santo. Another name missing from the list is Skip Caray a pretty good voice for the Braves fans.
Funny note: I was up by Milwaukee last summer and the Cubs were playing the Brew Crew in the 4th game of a 4 gamer in Milwaukee. Couldn't get WGN so we were listening to Uecker on the Brewers station. The Crew had lost the first three, were getting shelled in the 4th game and Uecker says "It's bad enough to let these guys come in here and think they own the place now we're just giving the damn games to them, that pisses me off." I was rolling on the floor envisioning Harry Doyle with the bottle of Jack on the counter and the young announcer next to him cringing.

Our lead announcer was just put in the hall of fame. He is getting a little on and makes lots of mistakes but is very fair in his coverage of games. Heard the Diamondback announcers on a trip down there and they were such homers that even pitches on intentional walks should have been calld strikes by their account.

Most good announcers have a bit of homer in them. They still call a good game. The ones with "Homer" attitude are the ones that are hard to listen to. Sounds like you ran into a couple of them for the D-Backs.

Great story DNRS ........that kind of stuff is really classic. The young guys are too afraid of getting fired if they say somebody is dogging it. We have a couple of good guys here in Colorado with the Rockies. Skip Caray was very good.....did he just pass away ?
I still like to listen to baseball on the radio at times. It is one of the few sports that can be covered very well on the radio , if the announcers are good.
