This isn't a rant against any particular school, because any number of them are guilty. But IMHO it's terribly unsportsmanlike, and just plain wrong, for the large powerful schools to schedule cupcake teams early in the season. I understand that the fans / alumni like to see a resounding victory, and that many of the small schools can fund much of their athletic programs for the year by volunteering to be a sacrificial lamb, but it's still wrong. Just looking at my local paper's listing of the schedule of top 25 teams for this past weekend & next weekend, I see games like:

Florida vs. Charleston Southern / Texas vs. Louisiana Monroe / Oklahoma vs Idaho State / Southern Cal vs San Jose State / Alabama vs Florida International / Nebraska vs Florida Atlantic

If I were one of the people voting in the polls, those teams wouldn't get my vote in the weeks where they play games like that. I'm more impressed with Georgia going to Stillwater and losing to Oklahoma State than by USC's beatdown of San Jose State. I'm also aware that sportsmanship and honor have very little to do with modern big time college athletics, and that's probably a fit subject for another rant. But Alabama could fill their stadium with a big time team (why not Michigan or UCLA, to pick two) and might even make their team better for doing so.

I believe there are only 3 schools that have never played what was called a division II school or lower. You have to wonder how many of those kids on the outmanned teams get hurt and how their season turns out.

Ooops, think it dropped to 2 after Mighigan State played Montana State this week.

It's the NCAA pre-season.
The cupcakes show up, normally take their beating and limp away with enough cash to run their athletic programs for the next couple of years.
They consider it an honor, sort of like being a sparring partner for a heavyweight contender but it pays better.

Later,

On the other end, UW was supposed to play Nevada last week but they opted out to play ND for even more money. So we ended up with a top 10 team to start the season with a new coach.
Also our other "major" college cancelled their game AT Hawaii next year and had to pay $300K to get out of it.
