Agree about these captaincies being over-blown. Maybe some of these guys are just too intense. On the other hand, Freddie might have the right idea. Set the pairings then, stay out of their way and let them play. Love what Venturi said about him a few years back............"last time Freddie got upset about anything was when his mom waited too long to change his diaper." That said - I think the guy has some really deep-seated emotions and cares a lot. He just doesn't wear it on his sleeve everyday.

REALLY good post. Freddie should have won more than one Masters and probably a few other Major tournaments , but i don't think it was because he wasn't intense enough. Some players are wired to practice every day and march around the course as if it were war , and some have a much more easygoing personality on the outside , but are very competitive on the inside . Couples was a warrior out there.......a few more putts made and who knows. He will be great for the Senior circuit.

Probably one of the worst was the final breakdown of his 1st marriage. They'd been fighting for a while and his ex picked the Masters he was leading - and won - to stage what she thought was the coup des gras! Saturday night, sans Freddie, at a little local watering hole close to where the players are staying, she stages an impromptu table dance...............in absolutely nothing but her pantyhose!!!!! Nice!
Magazine article I read said there were several players in the place and they pulled her down, covered her up and, in the end, Arnie donated his plane to fly her home with a warning from the Sheriff to never come to Georgia again. And, somehow, they kept Freddie in the dark and he won!
Otherwise, he'd have freakin' imploded!!!!!
Just what I read...............

I hate it when my wife does that.....................those tables get slippery sometimes. :)

I have never heard that story. Freddie has not had much luck in that department.......or maybe , TOO MUCH LUCK !

Was a small side bar to the story of his win in either Golf or Golf Digest. Can't remember - subscribed to both at the time. Was intended to point out how he persevered through all the "brown and gooey" stuff going on in his private life. Apparently, once the marriage started to go south, 1st wife turned into one really vicious piece of work and set out to ruin him. Wish I could find a link back to the article.
