So - has anybody been subjected to the new full-body X-Ray? I have. Didn't think it was such a big deal, to be honest. Since I fly so much I just considered it one more new wrinkle.
Apparently it's causing quite a stir. People are afraid of it and, from what I've been reading, rightly so. World experts and reputable scientists have even gone to the extent of writing The President to say it is not sufficiently tested and is simply not safe.
Sure you can opt out of it but you then are subjected to what TSA calls an "enhanced pat-down". That includes women having their breasts handled INSIDE their bras and their crotches touched outside their undergarments. Men are subject to having their "junk" examined, also from outside their undergarments. If it happened in the street it would be deemed a full-on sexual assault.
Saw sound bites of the head of TSA before a Senate Hearing and one panel member asked, "in view of the fact this has gone beyond a vocal minority and is now a major ground swell, do you not think you've taken screening too far?" Defended it by saying the head of Homeland Security had undergone the pat-down to assure herself it didn't go too far. RIGHT!!!!!!!! Janet Napolitano allowed a TSA airport screener to handle her boobs and feel her genital area! And Niagara Falls is in the Mojave Desert!!!!!
There's a protest forming up over the web called National Opt-Out Day calling for everyone flying on the Wed before Thanksgiving to refuse the body scan, swallow their dignity and, allow the much more time consuming pat-down (takes two officers, in a private room). Experts say if the protest comes off it'll completely cripple the major airports.
That could be an interesting week!
Cheers - Tele

World experts and reputable scientists have even gone to the extent of writing The President to say it is not sufficiently tested and is simply not safe. I don't fly that much, so I will not give it a second thought. It's another one of those things that we will not find out the exact dangers of it until many years down the road, like talking on a cellphone.

It's too bad, but stuff can be hidden in our private parts. A person has two options, do the body scan or don't fly. You buy the ticket, so you agree to the terms, it's really that simple. IMO Bottomline, Sure it disturbing that this is what it has come down to, but I would rather be subject to this than being on a plane that is blown up.

Experts say if the protest comes off it'll completely cripple the major airports. I don't really see too many taking part on opt-out day. People have places to go for the holiday and want to get there somewhat quickly. Only ten years ago, 10%+ of all travel over Thanksgiving was done by plane, this year they expect it to be around 3.5%, last year was 4.0%. Like it or not, the terrorists have won a huge battle in our backyard, we fly much less when we have a choice. We have caved in, sort of. Yes, tighter security was a much needed thing way before 9/11, so we did do that, but at what cost? That could be an interesting week!

For me, it is a blessing. I've had the pat-downs even since they started with my hips sp will just have the full scan. Had the puffer once but still had to be patted down so that was a waste. Read a funny scenario yesterday where a perv buys the cheapest ticket available and keeps going through to get the enhanced pat-down;-)

Yeah - looks like the great protest has been a colossal flop. In reading what I have in the past few days and applying a little common sense, the press is making a far bigger thing out of this than it really is. Are there instances of TSA and CATSA (our airport security) going too far? Sure! But not every time. It seems that CATSA is far worse than TSA. In my experience, when TSA wants to do a pat-down, they take the person to a private area and there are two TSA officers present and the same gender as the passenger. There are documented, filmed cases of CATSA officers insisting men unzip their fly and women open their shirts or pull up sweaters beyond their bras while in the open, in the screening line. That's just wrong and under investigation as are their supervisors for allowing it. Bottom line - this is not an easy solution. Air travel needs to be safe yet people have a right to certain privacies under both our constitutions. But ensuring both can co-exist is the crux of the issue. I'm not sure it can be done and I'm not sure I believe that buying an airplane ticket together with national security mean you have surrendered your right to security of person. I can see and appreciate both sides of this issue and I sure as heck don't know the answer. Cheers Chuck

I read where one guy had a catheter bag that was broken by the tsa during a pat down. Haven't had a pat down since June but they were never private here. I saw where someone has come out with underware that us supposed to block seeing your privates. Don't know if they would then send you to a pat dwon then though.

Nu - I happened to gain a travel mate on a recent flight - they put us in the same hotels/shuttles due to a series of delays. Young woman, 'bout 40. We're in the security line-up and she says she's had a hip replacement and knew her prosthetic hip joint would set off the alarm bells on the metal scanner. She asked to be scanned with the x-ray machine cuz it would show the titanium hip joint in the x-ray. Told, "Nope! The scanners aren't manned at this hour so you have to go through the regular metal detector." Sure enough, she set the bells and sirens off and then had to go through several minutes of getting "felt-up", including her crotch. That's just WRONG! TSA needs to wake up! JMHO from a constant traveler. Cheers Tele

Janet Napolitano would WELCOME being felt up by a female TSA agent by the looks of her.
We have lost the war if we just throw our hands up and surrender our personal freedoms. Gives the government the idea they can take more and more away. More control.........let them have it........i just want to fly to Peoria........feel that lady up...pat down that 6 year old......who cares. Hey...don't profile that guy from the middle east ! Yeah...pat down that old lady in the wheel chair good . Make her wish she took a bus. I feel safe now.
Just sign za papahs ! But......Roy's right.....no choice here. You accept the search , or don't fly. I don't fly.

I read that two flights yesterday had a F-16 escort. One flight. the same person(s) were going to the bathroom too much and the other flight someone was in the bathroom too long. All bathroom people got the full interrogation treatment after they landed, everyone was guilty of too much bathroom time on the plane and that's it.

All had the trots. The ones headed for Detroit were handcuffed and lead off the plane with a full gear swat team. Crashing Detroit might be a blessing.
