Is he the best golfer ever in the game at 60+ years of age?
Quick answer is yes, but if you take golf in the UK out of the equation, is he? No doubt that he has tremendous game still, that combined with still being fit makes him a force some of the time. The above combined with his skills, experience and mental know how playing links golf makes him a force for the open championship. But is he really a force any other time? If not him, who is/was better playing golf when they reached 60?

Sam Snead was an amazing player for most of his life. Gary player was very good at an advanced age. Jack Nicklaus was still hitting it pure in his sixties , but didn't give his game the work at that age. Tom Watson hits the ball beautifully at his age. His , almost , win in The Open in 2009 would have been one of the great wins in the history of the game. Let's see.....no wankers in that crowd.

A great list indeed. Tom is the only one in his sixties who can compete with PGA/Euro tour players, but again this may be just an exception with the Open championship. Jack made one cut at a major in his sixties, three months after turning 60. His last cut made in a major was the 2000 masters were he finished in 54th place. Tom finished 2nd at the 2009 open championship, but he was 3 months shy of 60, so we can't really count that. lol Tom has made the cut in 4 majors since turning 60 with his worst finish being 29th place, so he was better than Jack in my book. Jack still had the game and if he would have put in the time that Tom has, he would have made some noise in one or two majors and would have also won a senior major in his sixties.
Jack after 60: 1 cut made at a major, 11 cuts made at senior majors
Tom after 60: 4 cuts made at a major, 6 cuts made at senior majors with one of them being a win which was this year(has played 3 years less of senior majors than Jack)
Sam Snead after 60; 7 cuts made at a major, best finish 3rd. Very impressive, but the overall talent pool from top to bottom in majors is much better today than in the 70's. IMO
Gary Player after 60: Only one cut made at a major with a finish of 46th place. 33 cuts made at senior majors with the last one being at the age 73. No wins though, his last senior win was at the age of 54.

Making this difficult. The thing with Watson is that he plays so seldom now where others were going after it most chances they got. If you look at the Champs tour, Hale Irwin might be considered or even trevino. Again with our contest, I really considered playing waston, it would have been a better choice.

Did Irwin do anything after 60? well, he made most of his cuts and you cannot dismiss his 4th place finish at the last senior major, done at the age of 66.
Trevino has not played in pro event since turning 60.
I think your response was meant for the 50-59 thread.

Have seen that Watson has done commercials for the Greenbriar, must be a really sweet deal to keep him out of the Senior Open.
